Understanding Projector Lumens

When the color brightness is low, the colors the colors appear dull and washed out. If the colors are dull, the image may seem to be lacking vividness. Details can also be more difficult to see and will not be enough to maintain interest and attention. This may not matter in a room with the lights off, but it can be a real problem when giving a lesson in a classroom or during an important presentation in the office, especially if you are in a room that is difficult to darken. Fortunately, Epson 3LCD projectors display brilliant images even without needing to close the blinds.

3LCD offers both high color density and high with brightness.
3LCD engines send light continuously (not sequentially). All colors are available all the time. In 1-chip DLP, only one color is available at a time, resulting in lower color brightness and system efficiency. Some systems use a white segment to boost white brightness. This approach, however, is proven to degrade the color accuracy.

Q: Does the lumens value refer to both white and color brightness (white light output and color light output)?
A: No. Unless specified in the color brightness specifications, only white brightness is noted. Color brightness may be up to 1/3 the value of white brightness.

Q: How is color brightness determined?
A: Color brightness (color light output) is measured in accordance with the IDMS 15.4 standard.

Q: Can there be differences between white and color brightness (white light output and color light output)?
A: Yes. For instance, a projector that produces 3000 lumens of white brightness may produce only 800 lumens of color brightness. This can produce noticeable differences even when similar projector specifications and prices are compared. The expected results might not be attained. The color brightness may be up to 1/3 of the quoted white brightness value. Ask to see both specifications, white brightness and color brightness.

Q: Are lumens from LEDs different from regular lumens?
A: No, the lumens value is a standard international unit of measure and is not dependent on the light source.

Q: Why is color brightness not published?
A: Some projectors have the same level of color brightness as white brightness. Several manufacturers fail to mention that the color brightness of their projectors may be up to 1/3 of the white brightness.
